Protect Your Peace: Creating Better Work-Life Boundaries This Summer

Updated: Jun 25

Summer is wonderful.

Summer can also be loud. And busy. It's just MORE - more daylight, more activity, more buzz.

Sometimes it's the kids home for summer break. Sometimes it's the neighbor rebuilding a deck. Sometimes it's the landscaping crew that arrives precisely 30 seconds before your most important Zoom call of the day.

And sometimes it's simply the fact that when the weather is beautiful, sitting inside answering emails feels like a cruel and unusual punishment.

Whatever form it takes, summer has a way of competing for our attention.

That's why this season is often when remote workers begin to feel stretched thin. Not because they're working more, but because they're trying to work while everything else is happening at the same time.

And before long, work has quietly spread into every corner of the day.

When Everything Happens in the Same Place

One of the biggest challenges of working from home is that there are very few natural boundaries.

Your kitchen table might also be your desk.

Your phone might also be your office.

Your living room might double as a conference room, lunch room, and afternoon break room.

Convenient? Absolutely.

But over time, it can become difficult to switch off.

When work is always nearby, it has a sneaky habit of asking for "just one more thing."

Before you know it, the workday never really ends.

The Hidden Cost of Being Constantly Available

Many remote workers pride themselves on flexibility.

It's one of the great advantages of working remotely.

But flexibility without boundaries can quickly become exhaustion.

Being constantly available doesn't necessarily make us more productive.

Often, it makes us more distracted.

We're working while thinking about personal tasks.

Managing personal tasks while thinking about work.

And feeling slightly behind in both places.

It's a bit like trying to stand in two canoes at once.

Technically possible. Not particularly relaxing.

Small Boundaries Create Big Relief

The good news is that creating better boundaries doesn't require a complete life overhaul.

Sometimes small changes make the biggest difference.

A few ideas:

  • Block focused work time on your calendar

  • Turn off notifications during deep work sessions

  • Create a consistent end-of-day routine

  • Take lunch away from your desk

  • Give yourself permission to work somewhere other than home

That last one can be surprisingly powerful.

Because sometimes the most productive thing you can do is remove yourself from the circus for a few hours.

Why a Dedicated Workspace Helps

Coworking spaces are not just about having a desk and reliable WiFi.

It's about creating separation.

When you work in a dedicated workspace, you're able to focus on work while you're there.

Then when you leave, you're more likely to be present for everything else.

The boundaries become clearer.

The mental clutter gets quieter.

The workday feels more contained.

At Good Company Workspace, our members tell us they're not looking for a full-time office. They're looking for breathing room.

A place to focus.

A place to think.

A place where nobody asks you for a ride or if you’ve seen the dog’s leash.

Protecting Your Peace Is Productive

We often think productivity comes from doing more.

In reality, it often comes from protecting the conditions that allow us to do our best work.

Focus.

Energy.

Attention.

Peace.

Summer should feel a little lighter.

If your workday has started to feel like it's spilling into everything else, it may be time to create a little more space between work and life.

Curious about coworking? Come spend a day at Good Company Workspace and see what a focused summer workday can feel like.
